Responsible gambling

Free support, self-exclusion and tools for staying in control.

Last updated

Gambling is for adults aged 18 and over. It is a form of paid entertainment with a built-in cost, not a way to make money.

Signs gambling may be causing harm

  • Spending more money or time than you planned.
  • Chasing losses or borrowing to gamble.
  • Hiding gambling from people close to you.
  • Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you are not gambling.
  • Gambling affecting work, study, relationships or bills.

If any of these sound familiar, it helps to talk to a counsellor early. Support is free, and you do not have to give your name.

Self-exclusion

BetStop is the national self-exclusion register for Australian licensed online and phone wagering providers: betstop.gov.au.

The online casinos reviewed on this site are not covered by BetStop. On the scope of the register, BetStop’s own “About” page, published by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, states that it “does not apply to online casino games or other gambling services that are illegally provided in Australia” (BetStop: about the register). That wording is BetStop’s, quoted as published; this site does not assess the legal status of any casino. Gambling Help Online warns that “it may not be possible to self-exclude from gambling sites that are registered outside of Australia” (Gambling Help Online: online self-exclusion).

To exclude yourself from those casinos:

  • use the self-exclusion option in your casino account;
  • contact the operator directly in writing;
  • ask your bank to block gambling transactions. Many Australian banks let customers do this for their cards in the banking app or on request.

Account tools to set up before you play

Casino accounts can include the tools below. Our reviews record which of them each casino documents:

  • Deposit limits — cap how much you can deposit per day, week or month.
  • Loss limits — cap how much you can lose over a period.
  • Session limits and reality checks — reminders or cut-offs after a set time.
  • Time-out — a short break from your account.
  • Self-exclusion — closing your account for a longer period.

Set limits before you start, when you are not in the middle of a session.
